1. Write a brief an engineer can price
Most failed engagements are scoping failures, not talent failures. Before you talk to anyone, write down the system context (what the product does), the current state (napkin sketch, existing schematic, failing prototype), the technical constraints (supply rails, standards, enclosure, certification target), the deliverables (schematic, layout, BOM, firmware, test report) and the timeline with a hard date if one exists.
A brief that answers those five questions lets a competent freelancer quote in a single message instead of three discovery calls.
2. Read the portfolio like an engineer
- Ask for one artefact you can actually evaluate: a schematic page, a layout screenshot, an EMC report.
- Look for design intent, not renders — decoupling strategy, return paths, thermal relief, test points.
- Check whether they shipped to production or stopped at a prototype. Those are different skill sets.

3. Screen with your real problem
Trivia questions filter for memory, not judgement. Send a redacted page of your own design and ask what they would change and why.
